How to use shred?
Below are few example commands for shred that you can use in the terminal.
Overwrite a file:shred fileClick to copyOverwrite a file, leaving zeroes instead of random data:shred --zero fileClick to copyOverwrite a file 25 times:shred -n25 fileClick to copyOverwrite a file and remove it:shred --remove fileClick to copy
Installing shred command is simple. just copy one of the above commands for your operating system and paste it into terminal. This command is available for Debian, Ubuntu, Alpine, Arch, Kali, CentOS, Fedora, Raspbian and macOS operating systems. Once you run the command it will install the latest version of shred 2026 package in your OS.
